The PHA singlesticks come as either rattan or hickory. The leather baskethilt shifts the weight back to the hand, so they are very easy to control. I would think rattan would be the best thing to go with for a tournament. Rattan shreads rather than breaking, so there is no concern with a broken stick becoming a spike-like thrusting danger or a fragment flying across the room and hitting a spectator. So imagine the typical Escrima stick, but with a baskethilt that shifts the balance to the hand. They are definitely going to hit harder than the leather dussack, but probably not as hard as the synthetic arming swords that will be used in the Sword & Buckler tournament. Heck, I bet even the hickory version wouldn't hit as hard as a synthetic arming sword!
