Coming Soon - MS I:33 Reprints

As previously reported, the Royal Armouries have teamed up with specialist publishers of military manuscripts Extraordinary Editions to produce a full-size facsimile of the manuscript in a limited edition. Each copy of the manuscript will come complete with a companion volume containing a full transcription and translation of every page and a new introduction by Dr Jeffrey L. Forgeng.

Dr Forgeng is the Paul S. Morgan Curator at the Higgins Armory Museum in Worchester, Massachusetts. He rediscovered the manuscript lying almost unknown in the Royal Armouries’ library at the Tower of London and set about translating it. He became the world’s foremost authority on the manuscript and his original work published in 2003 sold out quickly and has been sought after ever since. He now adds nearly a decade of research to that original text.

On the plus side, Forgeng's updated I.33 translation should be available this summer!

Wish I could afford one, too. They look beautiful. Kudos to Dr. Forgeng for commissioning such a high-quality reproduction.

I hope they'll find enough people who can afford to scrape together (in total) the £581,500 (about $930k) they're asking, though (for all 750 copies).

 !!!

I hope they find the money too but I have a feeling that collectors are going to have to take up a lot of the slack. In the long run we're going to need 5 or 10 times as many martial artists as we have.

Maybe it's just me, but I feel that the cost is somewhat exlusive and negates any postive value in helping the HEMA community. Though I am a big fan of books made of paper, now I'm even more thankful for the Wiktenauer!

I too, believe that reprint is very beautiful. However, the cost of such a book is way over the financial means of your average HEMA enthusiast. They would get much better results if they made it cost worthy and not in limited editions. I was very excited when I first started reading about it, then was bummed when I saw the price. There is NO WAY I can justify to my wife to spend approximately $1000 on a HEMA book.

So sad. It is beautiful

Already pointed out, but a more economical copy would definitely be more helpful to the community at large instead of a few, select collectors. Perhaps our combined concerns will be heard.
