Hey Richard!

Here is a thread from last year over on Swordforums International. I had forgotten about it until it "rolled to the top" again recently. Some really good stuff in the vids from what I can see. Maybe it will help! Its says "Russian", but its actually Polish saber.

The Art of Defence on Foot: http://books.google.ca/books/about/The_ ... edir_esc=y
you can download it as a pdf

Broadsword and Singlestick: http://www.gutenberg.org/files/31214/31 ... 1214-h.htm

Lessons in Sabre, Singlestick, Sabre and Bayonet: http://www.fioredeiliberi.org/phpBB3/vi ... 11898&f=22
in the second post of the thread. I can't seem to open the pdf directly, but it works if you right-click > save as

US Navy Cutlass manuals from 1869 and 1906: http://www.navyandmarine.org/cutlassmanual/index.html

and of course, Hutton's Cold Steel: http://www.thearma.org/pdf/ColdSteel.pdf

You probably have some of these already, but hopefully this helps!

Thanks much guys. Even if we already have seen it, or have it, if its not on this thread, put it here. I forget things, others may get interested, and of course y'all have new stuff we have NOT seen.

Bonus for those who emulate (surpass) us!

Thanks again for taking time to help out.

These guys (Cossack group) are pretty good. Not sure if its supposed to be a living tradition but they know what they are doing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=StucLOl- ... re=related

This video should be analysed by anyone doing 19th century sabre: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QuYJU9OugZg
This is I believe a French sabre assault, so a slowed down practice without gear like what is still done in canne de combat (can't recommend this art enough for people wanting to do sabre).

Riboni Giuseppe, for a good idea of French sabre if you dont read French. http://archive.org/details/broadswordquarte00ribo

Manuel de Gymnastique. If you do read French this is the best ressource. Do some canne de combat and you would have a very close idea to how it was done.

These guys (who make their bread and butter with film) have replied to my queries and have provided help. In terms of Polish saber they took the 1830 manual by Michał Starzewski and compared it to the 1824 German manual by Johan Adolf Ludwig Werner and found it in agreement. They offered to answer my queries and combined with the help everyone here is providing, (be it French, Italian, Cossack or otherwise) I think we're on the right track!

Edit = Some of the straight blade techniques do not quite work with a curved blade. The curve allows you to thrust around corners so to speak, so we've had to ensure our parries prevent that. Neat stuff!

Is it just me, or does it look like there is an entire HEMA scene from some countries in Europe that the english-speaking HEMA community has had little contact with?

I mean, it seems like there are groups in poland and russia that have been studying their sabre traditions for a long time, and just recently we had some members of the spanish community join the forum (when apparently there are hundreds of members in spain).

To be fair Joey you hang out on a very North American centric forum (here, it is still even quite a new forum), even then this forum is frequented by a specific part of the HEMA community. This far from covers even all of North America.

yeah I guess so. I guess lots of these groups from non-english-speaking countries frequent their own forums.

Either way, it's always cool to see just how widespread HEMA is.
