Cold Steel's New Buckler

Postby Keith P. Myers » Fri Mar 23, 2012 7:03 pm

I handled one of these at FA 2012 and even used it in the sword & buckler tournament. Cold Steel typically "overdesigns" their stuff, which isn't necessarily a bad thing when it comes to a buckler! This buckler is 1/2 inch polycarb and weighs in at about 2 lbs, making it comparable in weight to a light steel buckler. But I bet a 9 mm bullet wouldn't go through it! It has a nice handle that allows for good thumb placement. And I don't think you can beat the price! I did a little shopping around on-line and found it here:

Here are the specs from the Cold Steel website:

I'm wishing I had picked up one from Hal at the event, you know...just to have around. ;)

I actually really liked these bucklers as well when I used them in the S&B tournament.

Agreed. For use with polymer sword trainers, they are really good. Not sure I'd want the plastic buckler when training with steel sword, however....

Third (actually fourth)round of praise from me, I really liked them, and yeah for that price everyone should have one.

I suspect that this would hold up well with steel and it's cheap enough that if it wore out, you could just buy a new one. I think it is a little bit overbuilt (i.e. I wish it weighed a little less), but not enough to make you hold it down by your waist the way the GDFB bucklers do. I think you'd have to *try* to wreck this buckler, so I'd expect it to hold up for quite awhile--definitely worth the money...

We used the polycarb daggers with steel rapiers and they get slices in them over time. Not unuseable, but certainly 'chewed'. I imagine steel weapons might do a number on the polycarb bucklers.

I'm sure they would, but I figure that it's okay to "use up" something that only costs $45.

Wonder if you could get something on the lip of the buckler. Hide, hose, something that would maybe make the item last a long time?

You could probably face the entire thing flushly with metal and roll the metal over the edges to protect the sides. That finished, you could then reinforce the handle by slotting through the plastic to rivet the reinforced handle to the metal face.

I'll call it the double buckler and makes tens of dollars!!!! muhuahahaha

Ok... I'm bored at work.
