Daily Practices

Postby Jordan Hinckley » Mon Feb 28, 2011 7:51 am

I was just curious what daily fitness pracitces everyone does. I am working on my own daily regime and honestly am looking for ideas that will not only help me reach my other goals but also my Sword goals.

I spar 3 times a week and during the week I do 30 min of calisthenics wile watching the daily show. On the weekends I do cycling while my wife does endless marathon training. I lost around 30lbs in the last year of this.

the calisthenics ends up being a mix of
squats
lunges
push ups
burpees
Core stuff

Wake up, do wind sprints in the courtyard (typically six laps).

Ballistic stretches to loosen up my legs and arms.

Jump rope (one minute on, fifteen seconds off, one minute on).

Fifty of each mastercut on my pell.

Fifty lunges/thrusts at each height (high middle low).

Five repetitions of a particular flourysh or chase from Lessons on the English Longsword.

Breakfast.
Do right, there is nothing else.

-stretching, mostly western style athletic stretches
-run through Tai Chi forms a couple times for a warm up
-Longsword cutting and thrusting practice
-run/jump rope (when its raining)
-sit ups and crunches
-push ups
-dagger practice

just a couple notes, I use my pell when the weather is acceptable and this routine take between 45-60 minutes also I take one day off a week to reduce risk of injury (usually Tuesday)

I run through a serious of longsword drills on a daily basis, effectively solo katas. I designed each drill to be quite a fitness workout for myself as well as being martially sound and sensible, so they are very useful. I tend to do about an hour of these drills at least five or six days a week. Furthermore, I work with an arming sword to strengthen my arm and shoulder muscles, but also to improve my speed, power, fluency, tip control and fighting stamina. Simple repetitive exercises of basic cuts, again and again, until eventually I reach a point where I feel satisfied with the workout. That usually happens for a half hour every evening.

I really do mean to do more by way of push ups and sit ups, but they bore me so very much!

Right now I am in fat loss mode so my routine other than martial arts work reflects that. I used to lift weights in the evening, or rather try to, but after MA classes I was too pooped. So now I do it in the morning and give myself enough rest that I can work on skill practice without fatigue interfering.

Daily Practices:
P.M.
Judo Practice: 100 hundred uchikomis, right and left
100 Deashi harai (barai), right and left
100 Seoi Nage, right and left. This varies a little, but my goal is to hit 1000 repetitions of a throw in the Dai-ikkyo or Dai-Nikyo lists of the Gokyo no Waza before moving on. I don't do this everyday, but I try
Longsword Practice
MKDF warm-up drills, Matt Gala's drills, 20 reps of each. First three Meyer Devices from Tag. Ringeck's Zornhau plays (I've chained them together to practice as a flourish), First Flourish from LOTEL, True Edge Segno Flourish. I also practice repitions of individual cuts, sometimes up to 1000 in a day, but usually between 3-800. This practice is done in similar fashion to the Judo throw practice, i.e. do a set number of reps and move on. The goal with these is to polish the motion, internalize and perfect, so it is quite necessary to make sure that I am not fatigued and if I start feeling fatigue set it I stop. Thrusting practice at hanging tennis ball for accuracy.
Monday:
A.M. Run distance 3-4 miles
Lift weights, Lactic acid training for fat loss: Chest
Stretch (sometimes yoga depening on how stiff my hamstrings and back are).
P.M.
Daily Practice

Tuesday:
A.M.: Weight Lifting Legday
Running, Sprints80% day, 5 sets of 100m sprints.
P.M.: Daily Practices
Judo class

Wednesday:
A.M.: Run if legs aren't too wiped 2-3 miles
P.M.: Daily Practices
Longsword Class

Thursday:
A.M: Weightlifting
P.M.: Daily Practices
Judo Class

Friday:
A.M. Running Distance 3-4 miles
P.M. Daily Practices

Saturday:
A.M. Weightlifting: Arms and Shoulders
Sprinting, Max Speed 80m
P.M. Daily Practices
Ringen & Longsword Class.

Sunday: Usually off.

Sometimes life interferes and training times get rearranged. Its taken me some time to work up to this volume and it helps that employment has been intermittent at best ;)

Wow, feel a little embarrassed now at my fitness routine, but here goes:

On top of my active a physically demanding job of throwing boxes of liquor all day/throwing bags of groceries all day, six or seven days a week, I typically do basic bodyweight exercises, pushups, crunches, squats, gymnastic bridge, planks, etc...
I also enjoy using a medicine ball for all of the above.

I live on a rather steep hill, so when the weather is good, I do 30/30's up and down the hill. (30 seconds sprint, 30 seconds jog). When the weather is crap I hit the treadmill at my apartment complex and do the same, if I'm not completely exhausted from work.

Longsword, I do tip progressions about three times a week, combo cutting drills, and partner drills if I can find someone.
