UPDATE 11/02/12

EXERCISE 1

It is not a tactical exercise, but a biomechanical one. The objectives are boost the coordination of the student, not to apply as a right offensive and defensive technique in the right situation.

Objectives: Turn the right and left side or the body without changing the forward foot (look at the footwork here), and close the right opening. At the fourth strike, setting aside thrust.

EXERCISE 2

It is not a tactical exercise, but a biomechanical one. The objectives are boost the coordination of the student, not to apply as a right offensive and defensive technique in the right situation.

First, a shadow simple exercise about turning the side of the body from a position where there is not rear or forward foot. This part can be made initially this way, and later with right foot forward, and then left foot forward.

Objectives: Turn the right and left side or the body without changing the forward foot (look at the footwork here), and close the right opening. At the fourth strike, setting aside thrust. It is made in a wrong way at the video, you need to use a Unicorn Ward to receive the fourth strike in order to avoid your sword to be deflected and be able to set aside with a thrust.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1X1XY_uAWpo&hd=1

EXERCISE 3

We have different levels of exercises, some are biomechanical, some are tactical, some are technical, and some are global. Global exercises try to boost general aspects of fencing, as this one, that boost the global techniques and wards with the hands up from the bind. In this exercise you CAN'T hit the opponent, you have to let it defend always, so there are no hits. The first part you can use strikes and thrusts. The second part you can ONLY use thrust movements.

You can use Mutieren, Duplieren, Schwerthau, Krumphau, Schielhau, absetzen, Ochs, etc... BUT YOU CAN'T, BY ANY WAY, LOWER YOUR HANDS FROM THE UP POSSITIONS.

Are you guys using the Ensifer Messer trainers in those videos? how do you feel that they perform?

Your group has a very distinct style of movement. I’m curious about your training methods. A lot of the footwork & blade work reminds me of what I’ve seen from later period fencing styles. Does your group begin with rapier before learning the other weapons, or base your footwork/movement exercises off rapier material?

How much of your style/technique is shaped by training without resistance & criticizing/refining movements based on observation & verbal feedback, & how much comes from isolated drills/games against resistance? In the former case, what are some of the key postural/movement qualities you look for? In the latter case, what are some of the isolation drills/games you use?

I would love for you guys to post some material in the Drills Drills Drills thread.

We have some students working with Spanish rapier, but we need more videos of what other groups are doing. Can you share some single rapier videos?

Thanks!

My main focus from the beginning has always been longsword (but I train and develop to some extend other weapons).

Definitely footwork and biomechanical work is not captured in early historical manuals. The common mistake with interpretations of early systems is to think that footwork has to be simple and rough, and it is relegated to a simple and undeveloped part of the interpretation and development of the system.

Legs, foots, superior and inferior body parts, shoulders, hips…all of them move in a supplementary way and have to be developed with biomechanical concepts, concepts gained from practice. The conclusions come always from practice, and are implemented into drills to develop them, and again used in practice and bouts, and again the conclusions of the conclusions from the practice are implemented into drills and so on…

A part of the footwork are steps, and steps can go to any possible direction, and be made in a lot of ways, it is just a matter of practice and scientific analysis.

I have not videos of rapier alone of myself, but I can show you some videos of other people here from AEEA:

Yes! It's gratifying to read someone else who believes this. And the proof is certainly there to see in your videos.

Footwork/distance/timing are fundamental to *any* hand-to-hand fighting art.

Cool stuff!
I really liked the longsword drill, the panther-like athletism and the limited blade work.
The messer and longsword bouts (didn't watch the rapier & dagger, I have to admit) look very controlled, good sense of distance and nice foot work. Excellent work from the bind, short blade paths – very good.
I think this is overall very appropriate to fighting with blades. Occasionally one would wish for a determined attack from the ward straight to the target. You sometimes seem to feel too comfortable with establishing a bind first. But then again, this is what I do a lot, too, and I prefer these virtues over over-zealousness anytime! Consequently, some of these bouts are comparably long, which is because the combatants are calm and concerned with not being hit.

Thanks for presenting some historical swordsmanship from Spain.
I am impressed. Keep up the good work.

Which is your group and where exactly do you come from?
