great guide James. I never noticed that about Meyer, how it's divided into a kind of glossary and then practice

Thanks much, bonus points for video of sparring in action that looks right!

We'll be going through text, people's advice, and what not as well and are thankful for it!

thanks James. that gives me a lot to think about. I would have a huge man crush on any one who makes a video of Meyers devices like our Italian longsword video series

I would have a crush of equal or greater value which would later lead to an awkward duel with John for (your name here) affection.

I seem to be getting on top of the day job, and may rev up the camera and take some footage soon. But don't hold your breath- May is more likely to see formal stuff...

It's actually the core structure- glossary, then teaching pedagogy (and then commentary ala Lichtenhauer in longsword). It's an unfortunate thing that Mike Rasmussen's translation stopped just as things got good, as it took me a while to go back and reassess the structure. If you look at longsword, the devices (Chapters 9-11) follow this structure:

1) Basic intro (i.e. what is a device, how to break it down)
2) Attacking
- Basic attacks from one side to the other between the quadrants
- Using basic feints (pulling)
- More advanced feints (running off, changing through)
- Attacking the same side twice, with long and short edge
- Attacking from the bind
3) Defending and counterattacking
- Meyer carefully graduates his options from different guards, increasing the complexity
- First actions from Vom Tag: parry-riposte against attacks from above and below, followed by provoking an attack and countercutting
- Actions from Zornhut and Ochs: similar to above, but using the Hanging is introduced
- Unicorn: the Krumphau and winding
- Key: Winding

and so on, finishing with counters against opening. I've got a rough draft of an article covering this but I need time to polish it.

Hey Guys!

You have inspired me to go back and organize and type up my notes on Meyer's Rappier/Sidesword. I will post it here when I get it done. This will serve several purposes. 1st Richard, hopefully it will help your group out, 2nd it will be a good review prior to taking Lee Smith's class at FA 2012 in a couple of weeks, and 3rd I need to figure out how to include the buckler so I can compete in the Sword & Buckler tournament at FA!

Great news!

This week we'll do another Meyer photo and I was given a pair of drills to try out. We'll film them.

So my latest question now is of knees.

My right knee is wearing out and I feel like all my weight is bearing down upon it. Am I doing something wrong?

sounds good Keith

as for rappier & buckler, maybe look at one of the italian sources that Meyer is similar to (I forget which one specifically, but maybe that one that's considered to potentially be where Meyer got it from, or something like that).

--Oh yeah! I've already spent a good amount of time looking into the Bolognese Method. I plan to take Steve Reich's class on the subject at FA. I also live relatively close to him now, and hope to do some more extensive training with him in the future.
