I am amused by the Italian attempts to 'Romanize' their knighthood and repair its image. The story at the start is a good one. I am reminded of one Machiavelli wrote about. He commented on how in one 'great' battle amongst condetteroti, none was killed except Lodovico degli Obizzi and two of his men who fell from their horses and drowned in the mud. Exaggerations, but the audience surely 'gets' the idea.
