and I agree on ever aspect of what you said, immersing yourself in another groups training environment is something that would be missed sorely if you went the computer only route, and maybe missing it all together

I also like this Idea, for instance It would be nice to be able to learn some things about the way another group trains before you go, fitness practices, levels of intent that sort of thing, that way when you show up you are prepared at least a bit.
